The most beautiful things reward the most careful hands. Emerald jewellery and fine pearl jewellery are sensitive to the world around them - and they show it. Here is how to keep them as breathtaking as the day you first wore them.
EMERALDS
Prized for their extraordinary depth of colour and the natural inclusions that make each stone entirely its own, emeralds are among the most treasured gems in the world. They deserve to be treated as such.
Do • Clean gently and by hand - warm water, a drop of mild soap, and a soft cloth is all your emerald will ever need. • Always put on and take off your emerald pieces while seated on a bed or over a carpeted floor - if a stone should slip from your fingers, it will land softly. • Store each piece individually in a soft velvet pouch - ideally your Devi Jewels pouch - or wrapped in muslin, away from harder stones that could scratch the surface. • Check your emerald jewellery periodically to ensure each stone sits securely in its mount. A trusted jeweller - and we are always happy to help - should inspect settings at least once a year.
Don't • Never use an ultrasonic cleaning machine. The vibrations can fracture the stone's natural inclusions, and the damage is irreversible. • Keep emeralds well away from harsh chemicals - perfume, cleaning products, chlorine - all of which can dull their incomparable lustre. • Be careful not to let them fall or knock against hard surfaces. Unlike diamonds, emeralds do not take impact lightly.
PEARLS
Pearls are unique among gems in that they are alive to their wearer. Born of the ocean, they respond to the world around them - and to the person who wears them - in ways that no other stone can.
Do • Wear them. Your natural skin oils keep pearls moisturised and their lustre - that extraordinary inner glow - deepens and improves the more they are worn next to skin. • Always put on and remove your fine pearl necklace while seated on a bed or over a carpeted floor, so that if it were ever to slip, it lands gently. • Put your pearls on last, after all makeup, perfume, and hairspray have fully settled. They should always be the final, crowning touch. • Store them flat in a soft pouch, away from other jewels - pearls scratch more easily than you might expect.
Don't • Avoid perfume, hairspray, and fake tan anywhere near your pearls - the chemicals in each will damage their surface over time, robbing them of the very quality that makes them so beautiful. • Never submerge pearls in water or leave them damp - moisture weakens the silk thread of a pearl necklace and can cause long-term damage to the pearl itself. • Do not store them in an airtight container as pearls need to breathe.
We are always delighted to clean and check your Devi Jewels pieces for you. Never put fine jewellery in a cleaning machine - the agitation can loosen prongs and cause damage that is difficult to undo. When in doubt, bring it to us.
