Laboratory grown jewels on the other hand are mass produced, and created, like their name suggests, in laboratories and factories that churn them out by the hundreds. Although they cost significantly less, they lack the depth, brilliance and history of natural stones.
While natural diamonds take billions of years to form, with intense heat and pressure causing carbon to crystallise, this process is mimicked in a laboratory to create laboratory grown diamonds. While chemically they are the same, specialist equipment can tell the difference – as laboratory grown diamonds don’t contain any nitrogen, while naturals ones contain trace amounts. Finally, laboratory grown diamonds don’t generally hold their value, as they can be produced readily in large quantities, making them much less rare, therefore less valuable.
